With last night's update, things should be running much more smoothly where updates to teh client are concerned. However, some of you have still had various issues, mostly related to following what the old client is telling you, which is incorrect (and why it is being replaced).

Issue: I get the error "cannot download patch39!"
Solution: This is due to using the previous version of the client to try and update. In the future this WILL work, however, the issue was in the updater itself, and therefore the updater had to be replaced. To update your client you need to view this topic

Issue:I downloaded the update, but it is still the same client, and my updater still tells me "patch39".
Solution: Your browser has cached a previous version of the update page. Resulting in your downloading the old version. You can try hitting the refresh button in your browser for a fresh copy. Or to update your client read this post for a list of direct links.

Issue:My client does not start. Even after the update.
Solution: This update was throughly tested in Windows 98, 2000, XP, and Linux. It should work. However in some cases things just don't go the way we planned. Its just not possible to take into consideration every system configuration available. There are some basic things you can try before posting to the client help forum.

    a) Are you certain you downloaded the correct file? Windows users, this was a 10.9 MB file.

    b) Are you using an old shortcut that points to a file that is invalid or deleted? For windows users your old jar files should have been deleted by the update installer. For mac and linux users, you should have deleted those old files as part of the update process posted here.

    c) If all else fails, uninstall War of Conquest, and perform a full install.

Windows users: be sure to use the uninstall utility found in your War of Conquest folder, or use your Add/Remove Programs feature. Windows users should NEVER just delete the War of Conquest folder without first running the uninstall utility provided. Doing so will leave invalid keys in your system registry. Always use the uninstall utility! Download from this location the full client and then reinstall.

Mac/Linux users, you can just delete all of the contents of your War of Conquest folder, and then unpack the zip archive for the latest full version to this folder, or a different folder if you choose.

Issue:I did the full install, and still have a problem.
Solution: Now is when you need to write a post in the client update help forum. Be sure to include:
    a) The name of your operating system. Windows? Mac? or Linux?
    b) The version of your operating system, 98? OSX? Ubantu?
    c) A detailed explanation of what you did, and what happened. We cannot help you if all you tell us is..."I downloaded and its broke!" The more details you can give us the better. The fewer you give us, the less likely you are to be helped in a way that actually results in anything useful.

Issue:I get a message similar to the following whenever I try to run the client.

"This program is set to be started in MSDOS-mode and cannot be started while other programs are active. When you continue all other programs will be closed. Do you wish to continue anyway?".

Solution:This problem is related to older Windows platforms. We used Windows 98SE as a test platform, its possible that this error occurs on versions of 98 that were not patched to that version. The only solution we have found is to do the following:

    1) Open your War of Conquest folder
    2) Right click on any blank space in the folder.
    3) In the menu that pops up, choose New --> Text Document
    4) Type into this document the following and NOTHING ELSE

    jre\bin\java -jar client.jar

    5) Choose Save As... from the file menu
    6) Name this file PlayWoc.bat
    7) Be sure that the dropdown for choosing the file type is selcted to be All Files(*)
    8) Save and Close this file.
    9) In your War of Conquest folder, double click the file you just created. A small black screen should appear, followed by the client splash screen. If the client does appear, DO NOT close the small black screen that opened, just minimize it. Closing it will close your client.

If this works just double click the file you made to start your client from here on out.
