Sept 7 2007
•Numerous bug and security fixes.
•Gameplay changes including:
Any nations created after Sept 7, 2007 00:00:00 GMT will be unable to unite fortification points into another nation.

No nation can have more than 5000 fortifcation points in reserve at any given time. Nations already over this amount will not be able to purchase more fortification points until they are under the 5000 fort limit.

Nations whose level difference is greater than 30 levels will be unable to become allies.

Players will be unable to log into their nation more often than once every 10 seconds.

Players who are chat muted will be unable to send messages to other nations.

Nation messages are now reportable and bannable. Subject to the same Code of Conduct as chat. There are NO filters for messages, and there won't be in the future.

Agriculture points per day will now be recounted when an alliance is broken.

Oct 11 2006
Client update. New client is required to play.
•The client will now auto-update itself, allowing us to deploy updates faster and easier.

May 17 2006
Client and Server update. New client is required to play.
•Players now have the option of purchasing credits using Moneybookers.com as their payment processor. This replaces the previous option to use StormPay.
•Players are now limited to $50.00 USD per day in credits purchases for all nations they are a member of.
•Players should now be unable to swear fealty to a suspended nation.

April 29 2006
Server update.
•Fixed a bug that was preventing players from swearing fealty to any other nation once they had sworn fealty the first time, regardless of the fealty time limit having expired.
•Players will now be prompted to swear fealty whenever it expires, even if they are in the same nation that they are currently sworn to. This will make players aware that they are renewing their oath, and not renewing it without explicit permission.

April 28 2006
Server update.
•The 25,000 limit on free credits will also apply to nations when they rebirth. If a nation would go over the 25,000 limit due to receiving an additional 1,000 free credits for rebirth, the nation will receive only the number of free credits that would make its total of free credits 25,000 or less. If the nation is already over the limit, its total of free credits will be reduced to 25,000.

April 24 2006
Client and Server update. New client is required to play.
•Fealty has been implemented. Players will be required to swear fealty to any nation level 101 or higher before they can attack, settle, evacuate, or fortify as a member of that nation. Players will be able to play in as many nations under level 101 as they wish.

April 18 2006
Server update.
• Offline defense is no longer available to nations at or above level 110.
• The blank edges of the game world are no longer accessible; the map now ends where it was intended to end with no extra space beyond the edge.
• Swap weapons like Geographic Teleportation can no longer be used to drag veteran nations into areas of the map restricted to new players, or high level nations into areas reserved for low level players.

April 12 2006
Server update.
• Fixed a problem that would sometimes cause a nation to be trapped as one block in one of the areas reserved for low level nations, when they were supposed to be migrated out automatically.

April 11 2006
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• Nations will now be sent a report when a technology becomes obsolete.
• Players who are currently banned for 3 or more hours will not be able to use the whisper function.
• When a player is banned for bypassing the chat filter, they will receive a report that tells them this ban is given by a fellow player and NOT an admin.
• When a player joins a nation, a report will be sent to the nation. We have also made the time it takes for a player to be shown in the member list after joining much shorter.
• Added the nation name to the migrate alert box. Now when you migrate your nation, the nation name appears in the alert box title as well.
• Nations will no longer be able to unite any free credits INTO their nations. Any existing "main" nations with more than 25,000 free credits will have any free credits over 25,000 removed at the next unite.
• The new Account Manager will allow you to set a security question for your username. If you lose or forget the password, you can answer the question to retrieve it.
• For new accounts you will now be able to supply your own passwords of your own choosing. You will not have to wait for e-mail to be sent, and can use the accounts immediately.
• All new accounts will require a security question and answer. For existing accounts this is optional, but we strongly suggest you use them, as then you can retrieve your password without waiting for tech support or emails that may be filtered by spam guards.
• The account manager will also list all the usernames you are associated with, and the length of any chat mutings or game bans you may have.

January 11 2006
Server update.
• Fixed a problem that would cause the amounts of rebirth and combat fatigue reduction received for credit purchases to be slightly lower than they should be.
• Password e-mails for new accounts are now being sent differently, in hopes that fewer hosts will now block those e-mails.

December 31 2004
Client and Server update. The client update is an optional download.
• You can now use StormPay as well as PayPal to purchase credits. This is especially useful for players living in countries that are not supported by PayPal. Almost every country is supported by StormPay.
• When attacking an area that is protected by Insurgency, a red shield now appears beside the defender's name on the battle screen. If the defender's defense is increased because they've been offline for over two hours, a blue shield appears as usual, representing Offline Defense. If the defender is bolstered by both Insurgency and Offline Defense, both shields appear, representing Total Defense.
• It is no longer possible to depose the sovereign of a nation that is suspended.

December 17 2004
Server update.
• A nation's geographic efficiency now benefits from only the first 1000 points of the Air Combat stat that the nation possesses. A higher Air Combat value will continue to make the nation more effective in combat, but will have no further effect on the nation's geographic efficiency.
• Weakened the effect of the Insurgency tech.
• The @suspect chat command can now be used on nations that have no members currently online.
• An attack now results in 50% more points for the winning nation. This is to compensate for the fact that the updated combat system gives the attacker less of an inherent advantage, so fewer attacks are won.

December 13 2004
Server update.
• Weakened Total Defense Mode and the Insurgency tech, which had both become too powerful due to the recent changes to the combat system.

December 10 2004
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that caused some nations to be removed from the all time top scoring nations list, and restored the nations that were removed due to this bug.

December 09 2004
Server update.
• Additional tweaks to the combat system to get the results to better reflect the final stats, and to get the battle icons to better display the relative advantages among the final stats.

December 08 2004
Server update.
• Changed how the results of a battle are calculated, so that the attacker's and defender's final stats both influence the outcome in the same way. The probability of winning a battle should now correspond well to the final stat values of both nations, the values that are displayed as icons on the battle screen.
• When a nation is united into another nation, the original nation that no longer exists is now removed from the lists of top ranking nations. Likewise when player points are transferred from one username to another, the username that lost points is removed from the lists of top ranking usernames if necessary.

December 02 2004
Server update.
• Changed how the Insurgency tech works, so that it better protects mains from 'checkering' but is no longer effective at protecting orbs.

November 30 2004
Server update.
• The stat icons that appear on the battle screen when attacking now reflect the final values of these stats for each nation, after geographic efficiency, convergence, double defense, and Insurgency are all factored in. Leadership was previously already being factored in, and continues to be. So these stat icons, and their brightness, now reflect the final values that determine the outcome of the battle.
• A fix has been put in place to prevent nations from having any land squares on the map while they're considered by the server to be suspended.

November 03 2004
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• Introduced a new 12 hour temp tech, Insurgency. While a nation has Insurgency, any of its squares that are adjacent to at least 6 other squares belonging to the same nation, have their defenses doubled. This makes it more difficult to attack a nation's interior squares, and is a useful defense against checkering.
• A nation no longer receives the normal minimum combat fatigue penalty for logging in and out quickly, if it logs out due to a disconnection. This prevents nations from gaining combat fatigue due to a member with a poor internet connection.

September 23 2004
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• Changed the banning system. Most rule violations in chat will result in bans from chat, with temporary or permanent bans from the game reserved for only the worst or most repeated offenses. Bans are now better targeted so that they should only affect the player they are intended to affect, and they will apply to all of that player's usernames. Also, all chat and game bans that were previously in effect have been wiped clean, all players are given the opportunity to start with a fresh record.
• The War of Conquest Rules of Conduct have been updated to promote a more fun player experience. Click here to read the updated rules.
• Added a clock in the lower right corner of the map, so that War of Conquest players can have a common time frame to refer to. The time it displays is GMT, Greenwich Mean Time.
• A nation can now change its color! There are also 6 new colors that are only accessible this way.
• Whispers are no longer converted to all lower case.
• Whispers are now marked by an orange chat bullet, so players can tell when a line of chat was truly whispered.
• Several other minor changes and bug fixes.

June 18 2004
Server update.
• Now no nation with more than 8 members can unite with another nation. This is to prevent a sabotage tactic of uniting dozens of members into a nation.

June 9 2004
Server update.
• The attribute value that a nation contributes to its allies now factors in that nation's geographic efficiency.

May 3 2004
Server update.
• Tweaked the banning system. If a player is banned under 4 different usernames, then all of that player's usernames will be locked out of the game for the duration of that ban.

April 30 2004
Server update.
• Modified the banning system to prevent players from being wrongfully banned because they share an IP address or e-mail address with a banned player. Now, if a username is banned, the same player may still log in with a different username. However as soon as any chat complaint is filed against this second username, it will be banned for the duration of the first username's ban.

April 22 2004
Server update.
• Combat fatigue is no longer increased by logging in to a suspended nation.
• When a chat complaint is filed for filter bypassing, the violator is now automatically banned from public chat for 10 minutes. Any players who file false chat complaints in order to ban other players from chat without cause, will be banned temporarily from logging in to the game.
• The lists of top prize winning nations will now show the top 25 rather than just the top 10.
• Several minor fixes to the chat complaint system.

April 20 2004
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• Fixed a problem that was introduced with last week's update, which caused lag, missing lines of chat, missing tech lists, etc.
• Fixed a problem that had caused the zoomed out map views to update infrequently.
• Fixed a recent bug with the Nuclear Bomb technology that caused it to be unavailable.
• Decreased the Agriculture bonus that several technologies grant, because farming had become somewhat overpowered.
• Now only a nation's Sovereign and Co-Sovereigns can distribute their nation's prize money.
• To avoid encouraging the creation of thousands of invulnerable single square farm nations, the number of farming points gained per day is now equal to the final Agriculture bonus times 100, OR the nation's area times 100, whichever is lower.

April 15 2004
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• Introduced a new nation stat, Agriculture. The number of points that a nation earns per day from farming is no longer determined by how large the nation is; instead, it's determined by the value of the nation's agriculture stat. A nation can increase its agriculture stat by capturing Black Soil and Fresh Water resources, and by researching and purchasing several different technologies.
• Introduced several new technologies, including Irrigation Trenches, Tractor, Pesticides, Genetically Modified Foods, Anagronomy, and Trebuchet. Modified several existing techs and resources, including Black Soil, Fresh Water, Dense Forests, Hillock, Agriculture, Abundant Growth, and Human Photosynthesis. Besides giving Agriculture bonuses, these changes provide additional Biological Warfare and Guerrilla Warfare bonuses.
• Added the ability to choose which War of Conquest game world to connect to. Note that this is a work in progress, and that there won't actually be a second game world for several weeks still.
• Revamped the networking code in order to decrease the load on the server.
• Prize money will now be distributed more evenly throughout the day, reducing the "dry periods" that sometimes occur when no credits have recently been purchased.
• Fixed a problem that would sometimes cause the game's "clock" to stop temporarily, delaying the distribution of points to nations that had recently united.
• Improved the chat complaint system to help avoid duplicate penalties and to help catch spammers.
• While most nations will still be able to be destroyed after no members have logged into it for at least 14 days, nations that have won at least $50 of prize money, or who have spent at least $50 purchasing credits, will not be able to be completely destroyed until no member has logged into it for at least 1 year.

March 17 2004
Server update.
• Fixed an exploit that could have been used to gain points quickly. Now when a nation rebirths, its number of pending points, owed to the nation from having united with another nation, is reduced by the same fraction as the nation's actual points.
• Fixed a problem with the Top Winners page.

February 26 2004
Server update.
• Added a new chat command, @suspect nation_name, which will cause the server to log all of the actions taken by the given nation. If you suspect a nation of hacking or otherwise cheating, you can use this command and then e-mail me the name of the nation and the reason you believed there was hacking involved.
• Fixed several minor bugs.

January 19 2004
Server update.
• Minor tweaks to the chat filter, chat complaint system, and geographic efficiency.
• Fixed a bug with map flags. Now a nation can once again have only one flag to a particular map location.

January 14 2004
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• This update completely revamps the way that standards of conduct are enforced in War of Conquest's chat. Rather than having chat moderators online who temporarily ban violators from chat, the new system allows any player to easily file a complaint about a line of chat that violates the rules of conduct. A complaint is later reviewed and if it is found to be valid, the violator will be warned and/or temporarily banned from logging in to the game. For more information about how this system works, click here. For a complete list of the updated rules of conduct, click here.
• The chat log can now be opened up in a seperate draggable, resizable window. Special thanks to Tina Woods (Melesande) for implementing this handy feature.

December 30 2003
Server update.
• A nation can no longer unite into a second nation that is suspended.
• @give_credits can no longer be used to give zero credits.

December 19 2003
Client and Server update. New client download is required.
• This update fixes a major bug that made unviewable any areas of the map containing a nation that was created very recently.
• Fixed a problem with the positioning of the buttons that appear over the chat entry field.
• The Counter Invade checkbox in the Nation Panel is now more difficult to switch accidentally.

December December 03
Server update.
• A nation may now only use @suspend_nation at most once per day.
• When a nation uses @suspend_nation, it breaks any alliances that it may have with other nations. And while the nation is suspended, it may not form any new alliances.

December 7 2003
Server update.
• The recently added @transfer_points command has caused several problems. This update addresses these problems. Every username's player points total has been reset to its value on November 25th, before the @transfer_points command was introduced.
#149; The @transfer_points command can now only be used to transfer player points between two accounts that were created using the same e-mail address.
• Besides the lists of all time highest scoring nations and players, there are now lists of the highest scoring nations and players during the current month. Note that the all time player points list is now empty, but the highest scoring usernames will be added back onto it as each one earns more points.
• Because nations now lose rebirth points based on their potential level rather than their actual level, it is more difficult to let a nation rest idle temporarily. To address this, a new chat command @suspend_nation has been added. This command will remove the nation from the map entirely. While suspended the nation will lose no rebirth points regardless of its level, and it may remain suspended for up to 120 days before it is deleted. Use the @restore_nation command to return a suspended nation to the map.
• Players with the 'Civilian' rank are now limited even further; they can no longer change their nation's counter-invade setting, or form or break alliances with other nations.
• A nation's lifetime winnings total now stays with it when it unites into another nation.
• The limit of sending up to 10 messages per day now only applies to messages sent to other nations, not those sent within your own nation.

November 28 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause a nation's list of resources to be corrupted after a server downtime.
• Fixed a problem with the @transfer_points command that could result in a username losing all of its player points, if it tried to transfer them to itself.
• Further precautions against the use of 'bots'.

November 26 2003
Client and server update. New client download is required.
• Client window has been resized to fit better within an 800x600 screen.
• Implemented Combat Fatigue. This will only affect nations that have several members who are online frequently. For more information about how this works, click here.
• The client has been made less susceptible to hacking, including the use of automated 'bots'.
• The chat log now uses a different font, making it easier to tell apart similar looking characters.
• The chat log has been fixed so that it scrolls correctly.
• A nation now receives 25,000 points per dollar spent purchasing credits via PayPal.
• The interface has been reorganized and clarified. This includes the addition of the new Winnings Panel, Member List Panel, and Stats Panel.
• After clicking the Info button to enter Info mode, you can now click the Info button again to exit Info mode without calling up any information.
• From the Chat panel, you can now access a list of available chat commands.
• The server will now wait several minutes longer before logging out an inactive client.
• A nation's sovereign may now leave their nation even when there are still other members in the nation. When this occurs, the next highest ranking member will automatically be promoted to sovereign.
• A nation may now only send a maximum of 10 messages and 10 alliance requests per day. This is to eliminate abuses of these systems to 'spam' other players.
• If no player has logged in to a nation for over 24 hours, that nation will stop receiving points from agriculture. This is to discourage completely inactive nations from filling up the map, as farms.
• A nation's countdown to rebirth now decreases at a rate that's determined by the nation's potential level, given how many points the nation has, rather than by its actual level.
• There's a new chat command, @transfer_points, which may be used to transfer all of one username's player points to another username. For instance, to transfer points from warrior1 to warrior2, log in as warrior1 and enter "@transfer_points warrior2".
• Several additional small graphics fixes, interface enhancements, and optimizations.

Many thanks to Tina Woods (aka Melesande) who did a great job working on this client update! Many of the handiest new features wouldn't have made it in without her efforts!

November 6 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause messages from the server not to reach the client.
• Temporary techs will now no longer count down towards expiring while the server is not online.
• Changed the formula for a nation's maximum number of republics to (3 + (level / 10)).

October 28 2003
Server update.
• A nation now receives 10,000 points for each dollar that it spends purchasing credits. This applies only to credits purchased using PayPal, not those purchased using using prize winnings.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause a demoted sovereign to be re-added to a nation's list of members, as a second sovereign.

October 1 2003
Server update.
• Fixed bugs that would cause a nation's counts of forts and republics to be reset when another nation united with it.
• Changed the formula for a nation's maximum number of republics to (3 + (level / 8)).
• When a player changes a nation's password, it is now noted in the nation's history.
• Added the "@info <nation_name>" chat command, which can be used to quickly display the Nation Info panel for any nation.

September 25 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that caused a nation's prize winnings to be reduced to $0 when another nation unites into it. This bug existed only over the past 12 hours; if your nation lost its prize winnings over the past 12 hours due to a unite, write to contact@warofconquest.com to have this fixed. Please include the name of the nation.
• Fixed a bug with the report generated when a nation's level advances.

September 25 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that caused any nations created last night not to gain a technology when they advance a level. Any player who created a nation last night and whose nation does not have the correct number of technologies, write to contact@warofconquest.com to have this fixed. Please include the name of the nation.

September 25 2003
Server update.
• Major optimizations to improve server performance.

September 8 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause the chat filter to erroneously ban a player from chat as if they'd been spamming.

September 5 2003
Server update.
• Improved the chat filter. It will now automatically ban a player for spamming in public chat.
• Further tweaks to the security system to help prevent it from blocking some legitimate players.

August 29 2003
Client and server update.
• While it is not necessary to download the new version of the client to play, zooming out the map view will no longer work with the previous version of the client.
• The zoom out feature has been improved, so that it should no longer fail to display the map, or show only a partial map.
• The behavior of the chat log scrollbar has been improved.
• The "Click here to continue" popup now appears less frequently.
• Chat text from the unmoderated public chat forum now begins with an orange bullet rather than black.

August 28 2003
Server update.
• Adjusted the prices of several technologies.
• Fixed a few minor bugs.

August 27 2003
Server update.
• Expanded the game world, and introduced several new areas reserved for low level nations. This update unfortunately required changes to the existing land, and also caused the resources to change positions.
• Now two clients are allowed to be logged in from the same computer at one time, rather than just one. Only one client from a given computer can be logged in to a single nation at one time however.
• The number of points that a nation receives for attacking a nation with low convergence, geographic efficiency, or leadership efficiency, has been increased.
• A nation's leadership efficiency now facters into the number of agriculture points that the nation receives for farming, just as geographic efficiency always has.
• All techs and abilities that may be purchased will have a minimum price of 5 cents.

August 22 2003
Server update.
• Further tweaks to the security system to help prevent it from blocking some legitimate players.
• Fixed a loophole that allowed nations to remain in the new player area indefinitely, by uniting with a new nation every few days.

August 21 2003
Client and server update. New client download is required.
• Introduces a new game concept, Republics. Each nation starts out as a single republic, and each time a nation unites into it, its number of republics increases by the uniting nation's number of republics. A nation can only support so many republics - its number of supportable republics increases with the nation's age and level. For more information see the section on republics.
• Introduces three new player ranks: Civilian, Captain, and Co-Sovereign. Players who join an existing nation now start off at the Civilian rank. For more information on these ranks, see the section on member ranks.
• The History Panel has been added as a new premium feature. This panel displays the major events in your nation's history over the past seven days, and can be useful in tracking down saboteurs.
• Now every so often a small pop-up will appear over the map view, asking the player to "Click here to continue". This is to prevent players from cheating the game by using automated macro "robots" to play for them.
• Turning off the "Nations in Chat List" checkbox in the Chat Panel now prevents your nation from receiving chat messages sent from players who have added your nation to their chat list.
• There is now a "Block Whispers" checkbox in the Chat Panel that, when checked, will prevent your nation from receiving chat messages that are sent to it using the @whisper command.
• A third public chat channel has been added, called "Unmoderated". Players who have been banned from the New Players and General chat channels will still be able to chat in the Unmoderated channel, and this channel will not be regulated by moderators. This new chat channel is intended only for players who are 18 or older.
• When using the scrollbar to view earlier sections of the chat log, it will now keep its place when you release the scroll widget. To resume scrolling as new chat messages appear, scroll back down to the very bottom of the chat log.
• Now a player will be asked only once whether they would like to add a particular nation to their nation's chat list.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause the Java client to crash when settling automatically.
• The dot to the left of each line of chat now comes in three different colors; green to signify chat text from the New Player public chat channel, red for text from a moderator, and black otherwise.
• There are now small shrubs scattered throughout the new player area of the world, to help players recognize the border of this area.
• The login screen now features a link to launch the web site www.warofconquest.com in a browser.

August 19 2003
Server update.
• Further tweaks to the security system to help prevent it from blocking dial-up players.
• Only one War of Conquest client can be run on a given computer at one time.
• When a high level nation attacks a fortified area belonging to a nation that is below level 20, it now destroys 4 of the primitive forts with a single successful attack.
• Using teleport weapons against a fortified square now slowsthe rate at which that square can be refortified. This was previously the case only for non teleport weapons.

August 15 2003
Server update.
• A player's rank must now be at least Commander for that player to be able to delete map flags.
• The security system intended to block hackers from performing harmful actions to their nation has been tweaked to help prevent it from blocking some players with dial-up connections.
• Fixed a bug in the displaying of a nation's history using the @history command.
• The public chat logs now list for each line of chat whether it was entered in the General (G) or New Player (N) chat channel.
• Added the @chat_all command for moderators, allowing them to be on both public chat channels at once. This is to help solve the problem with there being too few moderators on the New Player channel.

August 14 2003
Server update.
• Now only a nation's sovereign can migrate their nation. This is to cut down on the incidents of players being promoted to general and then sabotaging their nation by migrating it.
• The game now keeps a record of each nation's "history" over the past seven days. To view this history for your nation, enter the chat command @history. Your nation's history will then appear in your reports log. (This is a temporary solution; with the next client update the history will appear in a panel of its own.) This will be useful for nations that believe they have been hacked or sabotaged by one of their own members - they'll now be able to determine immediately who the culprit is.

August 13 2003
Server update.
• Introduces a new feature to help prevent hackers from using stolen passwords to do harm to a nation, by keeping track of a player's location and disabling certain functions if the location abruptly changes. Occasionally, this may result in a player who has changed computers finding that they're unable to perform certain functions, such as migrating. It may be necessary to play on that new computer for a few days before the functions will become available again.

August 8 2003
Server update.
• Rather than being unable to steal forts from a nation more than 100 levels lower, a nation is now unable to steal forts from any nation that is below level 20. But an attack with a teleport weapon will destroy these primitive forts twice as fast as normal forts.
• Fixed a bug that would made it look like a nation received no points for attacking another nation with a teleport weapon.

August 7 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a longstanding bug that would somtimes cause a nation to be unable to use a resource or research a technology that it has all the requirements for. Any nation that already has this problem will be unaffected, but no nation should ever develop this problem again.
• Fixed a problem that would allow some older nations to enter the new nation area of the world.
• A nation that uses a swapping weapon such as Geographic Teleportation to take away another nation's forts will now only receive the stolen forts if there is less than a 100 level difference between the two nations. Otherwise, the stolen forts are considered too primitive to be used by the attacking nation.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes result in a nation becoming unplayable after it gives credits to another nation.
• When logging in or joining a nation, entering three incorrect passwords will cause the server to ignore any further attempts for 5 minutes. This is to impede 'hackers' who try to guess the passwords of other players.

July 28 2003
Server update.
• The number of points that a nation receives for attacking is now also proportional to the defending nation's leadership efficiency.
• A nation's temporary technologies now expire when they should, rather than waiting until the next time a player logs into that nation.

July 16 2003
Server update.
• A new nation can now only stay in the new player area for at most 7 days - after 7 days the nation will automatically be migrated to the main area of the game world. This change will not affect any existing nations until 7 days from today.
• A nation is now migrated out of the new player area when it reaches the number of points that enables it to achieve level 30 (43,821 points), rather than when it actually achieves level 30.
• The number of points that a nation receives for attacking is now proportional to the defending nation's geographic efficiency.
• Fortifying a land area that has come under attack within the past minute now takes one second longer, and can contribute to temporarily decreasing a nation's convergence, just like attacking.

June 24 2003
Client and Server update.
• Fixed problems with the client that caused a nation's weapon and counter attack weapon to appear to be reset to 'club' each time a player logged in.
• Fixed a server problem that caused the effects of land swapping weapons such as Geographic Spatial Inversion to be displayed incorrectly.
• Fixed a problem with the new system that gradually distributes points after uniting, which would sometimes lose points if a nation united twice in a short period of time.

June 20 2003
Server update.
• Added @whisper chat command, to chat directly to one nation. For instance, "@whisper westwind, hello" would send the chat message "hello" to only the nation westwind, regardless of what your nation's chat options are currently set to.
• When a nation unites into your nation, your nation will no longer receive all of the uniting nation's points right away. Instead, your nation will receive at most 100,000 points per hour until it has received all of the uniting nation's points.
• While nations still earn points in every way that they always have, a nation's level will only advance when the nation earns points due to an attack that it initiates. This is to avoid having a nation gain levels while none of its players are online, and so research technologies that aren't necessarily what the nation's players would have picked.
• Introduced lists of the nations and the players with the highest numbers of points. These lists are at the bottom of the Top Prize Winners page. If your player account belongs on this list, you'll be added to it the next time you earn any points.
• Fixed a bug in the fortification decay system that was causing forts in some areas of the world to never decay.
• Nations below level 30 that have been abandoned for at least 14 days are now automatically removed from the game world.
• Various other minor bug fixes.

May 23 2003
Server update.
• The formula used to determine how many forts a nation can support has been changed, from (area + (4 *level)) to ((area / 2) + (4 * level)). This means that a nation will need to acquire a larger area to support the same number of forts.
• For the past week a nation has been unable to fortify a square that had been attacked within the previous minute. Now, a nation can fortify a square that's recently been attacked, but the fortification process takes several seconds longer than it normally would.

May 19 2003
Server update.
• The game now keeps track of how many of a nation's credits were purchased, versus how many were received for free (initial credits, and credits received for first purchase and rebirth). A nation may now give some or all of its purchased credits to another nation, using the new @give_credits chat command. For instance, typing "@give_credits Bopo,150" would give 150 of your nation's credits to the nation called 'Bopo'. Only a nation's sovereign can give out credits like this.
• If a nation that has received 250 free credits for its first credit purchase is united with another nation, the cost to unite will be 500 credits rather than the usual 250. This is to solve an exploit that some players were using to purchase credits very cheaply, by creating a new nation for each credit purchase.
• When a nation which is allied with a lower level nation is attacked, the number of points the attacker receives is based on that low level ally's level. This is to solve an exploit some players were using to gain levels rapidly by attacking a high level nation that was allied with a low level nation.
• The @reset command has been removed. If a nation needs its technologies reset due to a problem, e-mail contact@warofconquest.com and describe the situation.

May 14 2003
Client update.
• Fixed a bug that prevented players from logging back in after logging out while attacking, fortifying, or evacuating.
• Fixed a bug that made it impossible for a player to remove himself from a nation that had no weapons.
• Fixed a few other minor errors.

May 13 2003
Server update.
• Fixed a problem that caused the count of a nation's forts to be incorrect after the nation rebirthed or migrated.
• Fixed a potential exploit that allowed a nation to fortify a square that had been attacked within the past minute.
• A player creating a new nation is now required to give their nation a password to join. This is because many nations without passwords were being hijacked by unscrupulous players.
• Invitations to unite that were sent by nations that no longer exist can now be rejected, and removed from the list.

May 8 2003
Client and Server update.
• With this update, the old Flash client is replaced with the new Java based client, which is much faster, eliminates the 'script errors' and lock-ups that would occur on slower machines, and introduces a few long anticipated new features.
• With the new client, gameplay is no longer disabled while an attack, evacuation, or fortification is taking place. The map is unavailable while these actions occur, but the rest of the game interface, including chat, remains active.
• The nation panel now displays the nation's current number of fortifications, and its number of supportable fortifications.
• Prior to this update, if a player or nation's total points exceeded roughly 17 million, the number would no longer be displayed correctly. This has been fixed.
• There are now two seperate public chat channels, "New Players" and "General". All new nations start out on the New Players channel, but can change whenever they'd like. Experienced players who are willing to help out new players can join the New Players channel, while those who would rather chat only with other experienced players can join the General channel.

May 6 2003
Server update.
• A land area now cannot be fortified for one full minute after it has been successfully attacked by another nation.
• A player who has been banned from public chat can still use private chat to send messages to other nations, but now only the top five nations in that player's chat list will receive these messages.
• Fixed a bug that had caused nations to receive twice the number of points that they should have when attacking a single square nation.

May 2 2003
Server update.
• Introduced a new system that requires that a nation can support all of the fortifications that it possesses at any given time. The number of forts that a nation can support is determined by the nation's area and level. There is a new chat command, @fort, which will display your nation's current number of existing and supportable forts. For more information on this incomplete feature, see the bulletin board.

May 1 2003
Server and Java client update.
• Fixed a bug that allowed one nation to completely destroy another by pushing its last square off the edge of the game map.
• The @reset command no longer resets a nation's rebirth countdown to 1000.
• Fixed a bug in the Java client that caused all new nations created with the Java client to appear black.
• The Java client can now display tech doc files correctly on Windows XP.

April 11 2003
Java client update.
• Fixed a bug that prevented Windows XP users from viewing tech documentation files from within the game.

April 10 2003
Server and Java test client update.
• Moderator names are now marked with a '@' symbol in the chat log, to help differentiate them from normal players.
• A nation's sovereign may now delete any messages in that nation's Message Panel, regardless of who wrote them.
• Players who use inappropriate language in public chat are now automatically banned from public chat for 5 minutes.
• (Java client only) Several features that were missing from the Java test client have been added, including sound, mouse pointer images, and better support for launching documentation files in a browser.
• (Java client only) Chat text is now displayed in various colors to signal the source of the messages. Public chat is displayed in black, nation chat in red, and alliance and chat list chat in blue.
• (Java client only) A small black 'bullet' is displayed at the start of each chat message. Clicking the mouse on this bullet will display the Nation Info panel, with information on the nation whose user wrote that line of chat.
• (Java client only) The nation info panel now includes buttons for blocking and un-blocking chat text from that nation's players, and for adding or removing that nation from your chat list.

April 4 2003
Java test client released.
• An initial test version of the new Java based game client has been released. This client looks and feels very similar to the old Flash based client, but features much better performance and no more 'script errors'. For information on how to download and run the test version of the Java client, see the War of Conquest forum on the bulletin board page.

March 15 2003
Server update.
• The limit on the number of fortifications per land area has been decreased to 100. This does not affect existing piles of over 50 forts.
• The rate at which a nation's countdown to rebirth increases accelerates more quickly after a nation has reached level 200.

February 17 2003
Server update.
• Players who join a nation by uniting their own nation with that nation will have a rank in their new nation no higher than Commander. This is to prevent abuses that were possible when joining sovereigns and generals would automatically be generals in their new nation.

February 7 2003
Server update.
• Allows for moderators who can temporarily ban disruptive players from public chat.
• Many optimizations to reduce lag and downtime are introduced with this and several previous updates.

January 31 2003
Server update.
• The penalty for removing a member from a nation who had joined with a uniting nation has been tweaked a bit further. It now costs 100 credits, and decreases the nation's rebirth countdown by 50.

January 30 2003
Server update.
• Removing a member from a nation who had joined with a uniting nation now costs 150 credits, and the point and rebirth countdown penalties have been removed. This is because those penalties were being exploited in various ways.
• A nation may no longer unite with a nation that has no members.

January 29 2003
Server update.
• The limit on the number of fortifications per land area has been decreased to 100.
• Several other server updates within the past two weeks have reduced lag and eliminated a few rare server bugs.

January 16 2003
Server update.
• Generals can no longer accept invitations to unite - only sovereigns can. This is because generals were previously able to easily take over as sovereign by uniting the nation with a second nation that they created.

January 15 2003
Server update.
• Changed the way WoC sends out e-mail to fix a problem that prevented some people from receiving their password for new accounts.
• Made it more difficult to impersonate an admin in chat.

January 9 2003
Server update.
• The amount by which a nation's countdown to rebirth decreases for every dollar of prizes won has been changed from 1 to 2.

January 7 2003
Server update.
• The limit on the maximum number of fortifications in one land area has been decreased to 200.

January 6 2003
Server update.
• There is now a maximum limit of 500 fortifications per land area. If an area has 500 forts on it you cannot add any more, and any forts moved from a neighboring area will not be added to that area. Land areas that already have over 500 fortifications have not lost any, but forts that are removed cannot be replaced until there are fewer than 500.
• Purchasing $1 of credits with money still increases the countdown to rebirth by 5, but purchasing $1 of credits with prize winnings now only increases it by 3.

January 3 2003
Client and Server update. New client required.
• This update introduces Premium Features. All nations receive a 3 day trial period for the Premium Features, and after that they may be reactivated permanently at a one-time cost of 300 credits.
Map Flags is a new Premium Feature that allows you to flag locations on the map so that the map view can quickly be returned to those locations.
Messages is a new Premium Feature that allows you to post messages to your nation or another nation, to be read by players later when they come online.
• There is no longer a penalty for removing a member of your nation that joined by uniting, if that member hasn't logged on for at least 14 days.
• Many players have complained that they joined a nation and put a lot of work into it, only to have it be abandoned by its original sovereign. Now, if a member of a nation (including its sovereign) has not logged in for at least 14 days, any lower ranking member can 'depose' them, assuming their rank and reducing the deposed member to the rank of Warrior.
• Fixed a bug that allowed high level nations to possess Orbs in the new player area, by having a low level nation unite with them. Now when a low level nation unites with a high level nation, it is removed from the new player area.
• A player is now presented with a confirmation dialog box when they press the button to distribute their prize winnings, to avoid accidental prize distribution.

December 27 2002
Client update. New client not required to play.
• Fixed a bug that had broken repeat attacking. For real this time.

December 19 2002
Client and Server update. New client required.
• You can now automatically settle large areas of land at once by clicking and dragging a bounding box around the areas you wish to settle. This works similarly to the automatic evacuate feature.
• A nation now has a maximum area that it can support, based on its level. The supportable area is currently set to 25 times the nation's level plus 400. This number is displayed beside the nation's area in the Nation panel. If a nation's area is greater than its supportable area, the nation's geographic efficiency will suffer. If the area is more than twice the supportable area, the nation will not be able to settle any more land.
• When a nation migrates, it is now placed in the vicinity of the map area that the player who ordered the migration is currently looking at. This gives a nation much greater control over where it will end up.
• The technology "Reverse Engineered Xenotechnology" is now displayed correctly.

December 11 2002
Client and Server update. New client not required.
• Many adjustments have been made to the stat bonuses given by resources and purchasable techs. In general resources now give 70% of what they used to, while purchasable techs now give 200% of what they used to.
• Some purchasable techs now have a longer duration.
• Black Soil, Fresh Water, and Hillocks now give roughly twice the stat bonuses that they used to.
• A new purchasable technology, "Reverse Engineered Xenotechnology", is required to take advantage of the "Ancient Starship Wreckage" sites. Nations that already have starships are unaffected, but any nation taking a starship will need this tech. Download the new client to see this tech's name; on older clients its line will appear blank.
• A graph of the technology tree is now available, on the resources page.

December 10 2002
Client and Server update.
• Fixed a problem that was causing new nations not to migrate correctly when they reached level 30. Many new nations got stuck in the new nation area on resource squares, unable to expand.
• Introduced a draggable "tips" window that is diplayed upon login. New players will see this window each time they log in until they turn it off in the Settings screen. Existing players can see these tips by downloading the new client and turning tips on in the Settings screen.
• Filtering is now done on player and nation names to disallow swears.

December 06 2002
Server update.
• New nations are now created within the reserved area (the "sandbox") in the north east section of the world. When a nation reaches level 30 it is "migrated" out of that area, unless it has already left on its own. Nations above level 30 cannot enter this area.
• Fixed a bug that had required two nations to have a combined total of 500 credits in order to unite, rather than the intended 250.

December 05 2002
Server update.
• Fixed a bug that was creating corrupted land blocks which could not be taken by a nation.
• A nation's countdown to rebirth now regains 5 rather than 1 for every dollar spent purchasing credits.
• Mountains have been placed outside the mountain ranges that surround the world, out to the limits of the world itself.
• Many land areas with resources now have a different resource than they used to have. This is a result of changing the size of the world, and should not happen again any time soon.
• Converted an area in the north east corner of the world into a "newbie-only" section. This section is colored lighter in the zoomed out map views, but is not yet distinguishable in the normal map view. Only nations below level 30 can settle this land. Nations that already occupied this land have been left there for the time being, but will be removed later this week. Soon new nations will be created within this area, but that part of it is not yet implemented.

December 03 2002
Server update.
• Fixed a major cause of lag.
• Fixed a bug that would give nations the benefit of a resource that they had long since evacuated, once they got the tech that allowed them to make use of that resource. This fix doesn't eliminate this effect from existing nations, but it prevents it from happening any more.

December 03 2002
Client and Server update.
• A nation may now 'migrate' once a day to a random map location, to escape being trapped or stranded.
• The new Game Settings screen lets you choose whether or not to hear sound effects, and how many nation titles you want to have displayed in the map view.
• A nation can now withdraw an invitation to unite that it has sent to another nation, via the Nation Info Panel.
• When a nation is reborn it is now randomly placed on the map, rather than being placed among brand new nations.
• The Leadership penalties for allying with much lower level nations have been stiffened somewhat.
• Further fixes for lag, more to come.
• Affiliates can now place a War of Conquest banner ad on their web site. See the Resources page for more information on the Affiliate program.

November 20 2002
Client and Server update.
• This update introduces the War of Conquest Affiliate Program, which allows people to earn money for introducing new players to the game. See the Resources page or the in-game Recruit Panel for more information.
• Another cause of server lag has been fixed.

November 18 2002
Server update.
• New nations are now placed more intelligently, near other new nations that are online.
• Fixed a bug that had caused a nation with counter-invade turned off to nonetheless counter-invade an attacking single square nation.

November 13 2002
Server update.
• When a single square nation is successfully attacked or counter attacked it will now retreat even if there are no empty squares adjacent to it. When this is the case it will retreat to the nearest suitable empty square.
• The natural gas reserve resource now works. If your nation already possesses any of these, you'll need to evacuate and reoccupy the natural gas resource squares in order for them to take effect.
• Some of the technologies have been changed. Most notably, the less popular purchasable techs have had their duration or power increase. Also some higher level techs now give greater general defense, spy, and counter spy bonuses. If your nation has any of the affected technologies, the changes have automatically been made to your nation's stats. Because this update doesn't involve a new client download, you'll need to refer to the online docs to see the latest stats for the technologies.

November 7 2002
Client and Server update.
• Fixes more issues that were causing the game to lag. The infamous "top of the hour" lag is no more.
• Nations can now unite with one another, combining all the assets of 2 nations. See the documentation on uniting nations.
• "Alliance Efficiency" has been changed to "Leadership Efficiency", and it is now also reduced if a nation has more than 6 members.
• Added some sound to the game, for testing. To turn sound on and off, enter "@sound" into the chat entry field. Let us know your thoughts on the sounds in the suggestions forum of the bulletin board.
• Made it more difficult for low level nations to gain levels extremely quickly by allying with a high level nation.
• Some words are now filtered out of chat. War of Conquest is played by people of all ages, please refrain from rough and abusive language.
• Fixed a bug that would cause attributes with high values to be displayed incorrectly in the Technology Summary panel.
• Fixed a problem that could sometimes cause a player's username to be added more than once to a nation's list of members.
• The zoom feature is working again.

November 4 2002
Client and Server update.
• This update went live sooner than expected, to address the increasing game lag. Lag should be much better with this update, but some new features are incomplete and the zoom feature isn't in full working order. These issues will be fixed soon.
• Winnings can now be used to purchase credits in $1 increments.
• Fixed a bug that would occasionally cause a player to be unable to log back in after viewing a particular location on the map.

October 30 2002
Server only update.
• Fixed a bug that had caused several fake Orbs of Fire to appear on the landscape, which were not giving out prize money. Most of these have been changed into real Orbs of Noontide. There is one real Orb of Fire, located near the center of the map.

October 28 2002
Server only update.
• Fixed a bug that would sometimes make it impossible for two members of the same nation to be logged in at the same time.
• Orbs now award prize money more gradually, to help minimize "dry spells" when the orbs give out no prize money.
• The Orb of Fire used to give out 3 times the prize money as the next best orbs. Now it only gives out twice the prize money. The remainder is distributed through all the other orbs instead.
• When a nation is reborn, it now keeps a fraction of its points, to give it a head start in leveling up again.

October 23 2002
Beta 3 goes live! For more information, see the Latest News. New client download is required.
• Cash prizes are now real, so the 'Distribute Prize' button has been enabled, allowing you to distribute your winnings out to your nation's players.
• Game credits now cost money. The 'Purchase' button now brings up a PayPal window, and purchase amounts are entered as number of credits to buy rather than a dollar amount.
• A nation now receives 250 additional credits free when they make their first credit purchase.
• Ads have been removed from the game itself, and placed in the documentation window instead.
• Purchasable technologies are much less expensive than they used to be. Their prices will gradually change over time to reflect market forces.
• A nation in Total Defense state is now a bit more vulnerable than previously... it's defensive ability is now doubled rather than multiplied by 2.5.

October 17 2002
Major update. New client download is required.
• Added a Research Goal screen allowing a player to choose a long term technology goal for their nation. Techs to research are then automatically chosen to pursue that goal.
• Nations no longer reset when they've won a certain amount of money. Instead there is a "countdown to rebirth" that begins at 1000 and starts ticking away when a nation exceeds level 100, decreasing faster as the level rises. Winning money also lowers this countdown, but purchasing credits and exchanging winnings for credits raises it.
• Each alliance used to decrease a nation's alliance efficiency by 10%; now an alliance with a nation of a similar level can decrease alliance efficiency by as little as 5%, but the greater the difference between levels, the greater the cost to alliance efficiency.
• A nation now earns points daily for "agriculture" — the larger the nation is and the higher its geographic efficiency, the more points it will earn per day.
• Offline nations are better protected against attacks. Two hours after all of a nation's players have gone offline, the nation enters a state of Total Defense, more than doubling its defense strength.
• There is now an option on the Nation Panel to turn on or off "Counter Invade". If turned off, upon a successful counter attack your nation will repel the enemy, but not occupy its land.
• Fixed a bug that was causing blank spaces to appear in several lists of technologies.

October 9 2002
New client download is required.
• Fixes a problem introduced with yesterday's client update that prevented anyone from purchasing their $5 of daily free credits.

October 8 2002
New client download is required.
• Instantly move the map view to a particular location by using the new "@go" chat command. For instance, "@go 100m nw" will move the map view to a location 100m north west of the center of the game world.
• When signing up for a new user account, the game creates a password for the new account and sends it to the user's e-mail address. The user can then change the password if they choose. This is to avoid user accounts with e-mail addresses that don't work, which would be a problem once the game starts paying out cash prizes.

October 7 2002
Server only update.
• The % sign can now safely be used in chat.

October 1 2002
Server only update.
• Introduces a new system that dynamically adjusts purchasable technology prices, simulating a market economy. The system will gradually, over days and weeks, adjust each tech's price to strike an optimal balance between supply and demand. Most techs are likely to become less expensive over time.

September 28 2002
New client, but update not required to play.
• Some players were experiencing long delays after purchasing or losing a temporary technology. This optional client update addresses these slow-downs.

September 27 2002
New client download is required.
• The ads introduced with the last update were much more annoying than intended to be. Now they pop up less persistently, and never when the game doesn't have focus.
• Each list of technologies in the game, and the list of allowed technologies in the tech description files, now features icons that quickly show if a tech is temporary, if it's purchasable, whether it provides a weapon, and whether it's acquired by capturing an object on the landscape.
• Tech descriptions now have an "Acquisition" line telling whether the tech is researched, purchased, or captured on the landscape.
• Several technology names were showing up incorrectly or not at all. This is fixed.
• For nations with many weapons, the portion of the counter attack menu that overlapped the chat area couldn't be selected. This is now fixed.
• Jumbled portions of nation names would sometimes collect in the upper left corner of the map view. This is fixed.
• Chat and Reports scrollbars would sometimes misbehave. Fixed.

September 25 2002

• Because of broken links in the technology tree, there was no way to research 'Lens' or purchase 'Fast Gene Sequencing'. These have been fixed.
• Object Flight and Advanced Mechanics could be researched multiple times. This has been fixed.

September 23 2002
New client download is required.
• The client is now launched from within a web browser, instead of the stand-alone Flash Player. This allows documentation pages (such as technology descriptions and pages brought up via the Info action) to load up and appear much more quickly. If you encounter any problems playing War of Conquest on your system, please report the problem on the bulletin board, and make sure to include the OS and browser version that you're using.
• A few carefully placed ads have been introduced into the War of Conquest client, to make possible the cash prizes that we'll begin giving out when Beta 3 begins. Please support War of Conquest by supporting our sponsors.

September 17 2002
Major update. New client download is required.
